Prerequisite of the Course:

  1. You should have finished 15 semester credits of Japanese before taking this course.  You also need to have earned a C in JPN201 or have an Approval from Sensee (contact emiahn@mail.mc.maricopa.edu )
  2. You need to be able to type in Japanese before the first day of the class. 
  3. You need to able to write all Hiragana, Katakana, and about 300 Kanji characters before this class.

Course Description:

Objectives of the course:  After this course, students should be able to:

  1. read and write additional 116 Chinese characters (かんじ)
  2. comprehend, speak, and write about topics including the body and health, life and careers, communication and media, and nature and culture.
  3. make sentences including a various use of verbs and auxiliary verbs.
  4. make sentences consisting of honorific and humble expressions.
  5. make sentences that express analogy, expectation, a change in state, and conditionals.
  6. make causative and passive sentences.
  7. demonstrate and evaluate their own competencies defined in  the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning

Requirements and Grade of the Course:

Take 11 weekly quizzes (on-line)  including 3 oral tests (using Web Cam) 1,100 points
Take an in-person mid-term test (on campus) 400 points
Take an in-person final test (on campus) including Web Cam Oral Test 400 points
Discussion Activities (25 points x 14 weeks) 350 points
ePortfolio (max: 200 points by student, 200 points by instructor) 400 points
Workbook Assignment (max: 200 points on the eighth week, 200 points on the 16th week) 400 points

Pass-Fail Grade:  If you wish, you can take this course as a Pass-Fail (P or Z) option.  However, you can take this course as a Pass-Fail student only if you report to school on the first week of the instruction.  Please inform the instructor of your intention of being a Pass-Fail student as soon as possible.  If you earn 2,400 points or above, you will receive a P.  If you earn less than 2,400 points, you will receive a Z and will not earn any credit for this course.

  1. Deadlines are final and no make ups are given.
  2. Academic dishonesty of any kind will NOT be tolerated.   Each submitted work (test, quiz, or assignment) MUST be the student's original work.
  3. Each student is expected to read and consult Student Handbook of Mesa Community College including disability issue.
  4. Students who failed to take either Midterm or Final will automatically receive an F for this course.

In-Person Midterm and Final Tests:

    Both Midterm and Final tests will be offered at Language Lab (AS110, Foreign Language Learning Center  (480)461-7969) Map) on campus for those that are living in the Maricopa County, except for the oral test at Final will be taken through Web Cam.  If you are living outside of the Maricopa County, contact the instructor immediately for a special arrangement.

Oral Tests Online:

   Four oral tests through Web Cam are required to take in this course.  Tests on Week 4 (for Chapter 4), 8 (Chapter 5), and 13 (Chapter 6) will be taken online by a webcam and headset.  And an oral test on Week 16 for Final will be either taken in person or online via a webcam and headset.  A week before each oral test, you are required to make an appointment with the instructor via e-mail.

Discussion Activities:

   Participation of this course will be evaluated based on Discussion activities, which is worth 350 points (max: 25 points each week) (see Requirements and Grade of the Course).  By each Wednesday, you are required to post at least one message in Japanese and by each Sunday at least another message.  The topics and details of the Discussion Activities are fully  explained in each of the Weekly Lesson.  Click Here to see the criteria of the evaluation of these activities.  You may post messages in English beside this activity in order to ask questions.

Workbook Assignment:

    Students are required to complete the assigned potion of the workbook and submit the work at midterm and final.  Visit "Workbook" page to get more detailed information.

Kanji Notebook Project:

    Students are required to build own kanji notebook and submit it at midterm and final.  Visit "Kanji Notebook Project" site to get more detailed information.

DiaLog Project:

    Students are required to search for opportunities to practice Japanese conversation and record the opportunities and submit the log three times a semester.  Visit "DiaLog Project" site to receive more detailed information.

Lab Fees:

    This course requires Lab Fee ($20) to register.  This fee will be used for  miscellaneous expenses such as corresponding and material expenses.

ePortfolio:

    Students are required to build their own ePortfolios and show them among one anther on Week 15.  Introduction of the ePortfolios will occur on Week 5 and they work on them throughout the semester after that.  Visit "ePortfolio" site to get more detailed information.

How to Study for This Course:

    This course is organized on weekly basis.  A "week" in this course starts on Monday 12:01am and ends on Sunday 11:59pm (Arizona Time).  In "Weekly Lesson," there are four sections in each week.  At the beginning of your typical week, you will read "Objectives and Requirements of This Week" to figure out what you are supposed to learn and what kind of quiz, test, assignments you are required to do within the week.  After that and until the end of Wednesday of the week and until the end of Saturday, you will study by faithfully following the instruction under "Instruction Until Wednesday" and "Instruction Until Saturday." Of course, you are welcome to be ahead of the schedule.   And by 11:59pm, you are supposed to submit all of your requirements.  Details of the requirements are described under "Quiz" under each weekly lesson.

  It is recommended that:

  1. You spend at least 13 to 15 hours a week for this class and spend at least 2 hours EVERY DAY for this course.  Visit HERE to check if this course will suit you.
  2. You check the calendar and faithfully follow what is instructed in each weekly schedule.
  3. You post your questions to WebBoard as often as possible.
  4. You e-mail your instructor frequently.

Online Tutor:

    Online tutor is available without any extra cost for you.  Hours will be announced at the beginning of the semester.  Visit www.mc.maricopa.edu/~emiahn and click on Video Conference Room during the hour.  It would be great if you have a webcam to communicate, but without it, you can still speak with the tutor in the room.
