Course Description:

Objectives of the course:  After this course, students should be able to:

  1. read and write additional 73 Chinese characters (かんじ).
  2. comprehend, speak, and write about topics including travel, home, and transportation.
  3. make sentences including a various use of verbs and auxiliary verbs.
  4. make sentences consisting of transitive and intransitive verbs.
  5. make sentences that express decision-making, commands, prohibition, obligation, purposes, results of states of being,  and attempts.
  6. demonstrate and evaluate their own competencies defined in  the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning

Requirements and Grade of the Course:

Take 10 weekly quizzes (on-line and by fax)  including 3 oral tests (on the phone) 1,000 points
Take an in-person mid-term test (on campus) 400 points
Take an in-person final test (on campus) including Oral Test (on the phone or in-person interview) 400 points
Discussions Activities (25 points x 14 weeks) 350 points
ePortfolio (max: 200 points by student, 200 points by instructor) 400 points
Workbook Assignment (max: 200 points on the eighth week, 200 points on the 16th week) 400 points
Total Possible Points 2,950 points

A (2,950-2,500 points)
B (2,499-2,200 points)
C (2,199-1,900 points)
D (1,899-1,400 points)
F (1,399 points and below)

Pass-Fail Grade:  If you wish, you can take this course as a Pass-Fail (P or Z) option.  However, you can take this course as a Pass-Fail student only if you report to school on the first week of the instruction.  Please inform the instructor of your intention of being a Pass-Fail student as soon as possible.  If you earn 1,400 points or above, you will receive a P.  If you earn less than 1,400 points, you will receive a Z and will not earn any credit for this course.

In-Person Midterm and Final Tests:

    Both Midterm and Final tests will be offered at Language Lab (AS110, Foreign Language Learning Center  (480)461-7969) Map) on campus for those that are living in the Maricopa County, except for the oral test at Final will be taken either in-person in the instructor's office (Map) or on the phone.   If you are living outside of the Maricopa County, contact the instructor immediately for a special arrangement.

Oral Tests on the Phone and In Person:

   Four  oral tests are required to take in this course.  Tests on Week 4 (for Chapter 1), 8 (Chapter 2), and 13 (Chapter 3) will be taken on the phone.  And an oral test on Week 16 for Final will be either taken on the phone or in person in the instructor's office.  A week before each oral test, you are requested to make an appointment with the instructor via e-mail.

Discussions Activities:

   Participation of this course will be evaluated based on Discussions activities, which is worth 350 points (max: 25 points each week) (see Requirements and Grade of the Course).  The topics and details of the Discussions Activities are fully  explained in each of the Weekly Lesson.  Click Here to see the criteria of the evaluation of these activities.

How to Study for This Course:

This course is organized on weekly basis.  A "week" in this course starts on Monday 12:01am and ends on Sunday 11:59pm (Arizona Time).  In "Weekly Lesson," there are four sections in each week.  At the beginning of your typical week, you will read "Objectives and Requirements of This Week" to figure out what you are supposed to learn and what kind of quiz, test, assignments you are required to do within the week.  After that and until the end of Wednesday of the week and until the end of Saturday, you will study by faithfully following the instruction under "Instruction Until Wednesday" and "Instruction Until Saturday." Of course, you are welcome to be ahead of the schedule.   And by 11:59pm, you are supposed to submit all of your requirements.  Details of the requirements are described under "Quiz" under each weekly lesson.

  It is recommended that:

  1. You spend at least 13 to 15 hours a week for this class. Spend at least 2 hours EVERY DAY for this course.  Visit HERE to check if this course will suit you.
  2. You check the calendar and faithfully follow the weekly schedule.
  3. You post your questions to WebBoard as often as possible.
  4. You e-mail your instructor frequently.
  5. You contact Help Desk for technical support.

Online Tutor:

Online tutor is available without any extra cost for you.  Hours will be announced at the beginning of the semester.  Visit www.mc.maricopa.edu/~emiahn and click on Video Conference Room during the hour.  It would be great if you have a webcam to communicate, but without it, you can still speak with the tutor in the room or type Japanese.
