How To Use Microsoft Outlook Express With Your MCC Imap Email Account (In 10 Easy Steps)

This Web Page will show you how to access your MCC email account using Microsoft Outlook Express.  These instructions are assuming that you already have an account created and you can access it from MCC's Netscape Express Website (link).  If you don't have an account, please visit the MyMCC Portal Page.

Step One:

Open Microsoft Outlook Express.  If you have Windows 98/Me/2000, Microsoft Outlook Express is usually installed by default on your Quick-Launch Toolbar next to the Start Button on Windows.

When You Open Up Outlook Express, and if it is for the first time, Outlook Express will immediately ask for some initial information regarding your mail account at MCC. To provide uniform instruction for all users, this tutorial will ask you to cancel out of any initial information gathering that the Outlook Express Program will ask of you. 

Cancel out of any dialogue boxes so that you have a blank Outlook Express Program.  It should look somewhat like so:

Step 2:

Click On the Tools Menu and Select the Accounts Option:

You will see the following window:

Click on the Add Button near the top right of this window, and select the Mail option.

Step 4:

Outlook will begin to ask you for some information.  Fill out the first screen with your name and then click the Next button to continue.  This picture shows Bob Jones as an example:

Step 5:

Fill out the next window with your email address.  If you know what your MCC username is, your email address is <your_username>@mail.mc.maricopa.edu.  This is the username that you selected at the MyMCC portal page.  So for Bob Jones' example, Bob Jones chose bjones as his username, so his email address is "bjones@mail.mc.maricopa.edu."  Click the Next button to continue.

Step 6:

Now you will enter information about MCC's mail server:

The server type should be set to IMAP.
The incoming mail server should be set to imap.mc.maricopa.edu
The outgoing mail server should be set to mail.mc.maricopa.edu

Your screen should look like the picture below before continuing.

Click the Next button to continue.

Step 7:

The next screen captures information about how to log on to the mail server.  You need to type your username in the Account name field, and your password you selected on the MyMCC portal page for the password field.  You can optionally have Outlook Express remember your email password for subsequent accesses if you wish, so that you don't have to type it in each time.  Bear in mind that doing so will allow anyone you might share the machine with will be able to access your email without having to type in this password.  It is recommended that you do not have Outlook Express remember your password if you are sharing a computer with someone else.  When all the information is entered, click the Next button to continue.

Step 8

At this point, you are done entering information, so at the next screen, click the Finish button.

Click the close button on the Accounts window:

Outlook will now indicate that you haven't accessed the account before so it  will indicate that it needs to connect to the server to download the mail folders from your account.  Choose the Yes option

Outlook Express will now ask for any logon information like passwords that weren't previously specified.  Once that is done, it will connect to the server, and you will be ready to use Outlook Express to read, compose and respond to email messages sent to you.

It is recommended that if you are on a shared computer on campus, that you also delete your account settings after you are done with the computer.  To do this, click on the Tools menu, select the "Accounts" option as before, click on the Mail Tab on the resulting window, highlight the account you want to delete, and click the Remove button.
