Unit 2:  A Place You Know

Think of a place that has special significance in your life.  This can be a place you have visited once or many times, a place where you have spent a great deal of time, a place that you have never been but want to go to, a place that no longer exists, or a place that exists only in your imagination.  The only requirement is that the place must have special meaning for you.

Describe the place, using enough sensory detail that the reader can imagine it as clearly as you see it.  Then add a couple of introspective (looking within) or retrospective (looking back) paragraphs in which you analyze what this place means to you or what places like this mean to human beings in general.  How has this place contributed to your development as a person?  Why do human beings need places like this?

You can see samples of essays written by my former students at:

The two sample essays on this topic are "Home" by Weldon Rogers and "My Spot" by Michelle Branham.
