Overview of the Internet/WWW and its resources. Hands-on experience with various Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) communication, resource discovery, and information retrieval tools. Web page development also included.  No instructions will be provided for those using Mac or Apple computers.

PREREQUISITES: None.  However, basic knowledge of the following skills is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED:

  • The basic usage of the computer using windows-based software
  • Familiarity with Windows 98 or higher version and a text editor program such as Notepad or WordPad
  • Having access to a browser such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer
  • Having access to the Internet using an Internet Service Provider such as Cox or Qwest
  • Email Account - Students are required to subscribe to MCC Student Mail Account. In addition, students may also have one additional email from other system such as Hotmail, Yahoo, or search this link for Free Internet Email Services.
  • The ability to type at least 40 wpm is strongly recommended

TEXTBOOKS: The following TWO textbooks are required and may be purchased at MCC's bookstore or at www.course.com

  • The Internet, 7th Edition, © 2009, ISBN 13: 978-1-4239-2506-4 or ISBN 10: 1-4239-2506-8, by Gary Schneider and Jessica Evans, Course Technology.
  • HTML and XHTML, 5th edition, © 2009, ISBN 13: 978-1-4239-2545-3 or ISBN 10: 1-4239-2545-9, by Partrick Carey, Course Technology
  • or the shrinkwrap version of two books: ISBN: 0324810237

Supplies: 

  • Recommended:  A flash drive with at least 1GB or more.  You will submitted all your assignments electronically. No printed copies are allowed.
  • MCC Student ID Card (may be obtained in the Student Activity Building free with registration receipt), if you plan to work on campus using MCC MultiUse Lab.  You may also use the Elsner Hi Tech Center/Library at MCC to complete your assignments as well as accessing the Internet.

Lectures:  Important material from the text and outside sources will be covered in class.   Also,  lecture notes will be posted online each week for each tutorial.  Class discussion and group collaboration are emphasized and strongly encouraged as is student-procured, outside material relevant to topics being covered.

Assignments: Readings, hands-on assignments, review assignments, as well as case problems will be assigned after each tutorial (chapter) to help support and supplement material found in the text. These assignments may require the application of various software packages.  This is a time-consuming course.  Students should plan to spend at least 6 to 8 hours a week to complete your lab assignments.

Quizzes:  Online Quizzes will be given after each tutorial covering the concepts in each tutorial.  The quizzes will consist of multiple choice/true false questions and will be timed.  Students are recommended to review each tutorial so that students know the materials enough to work quickly through the test to be within the time allotted for each quiz. The quizzes will be in an open-book format.

Projects:   In addition to home work assignments and quizzes, students will be required to complete several projects in individual or group format.  Instructions will be given for group collaborations as well as individual tasks.  These projects replace the mid-term and final exams

Attendance Policy:   Online a ttendance records will be maintained. Please review Course Orientation inside your course contents for more information on attendance policy.

Withdrawal Policy: In addition to withdrawal due to excessive absences, students can withdraw from the course prior to the end of the 7th week of classes without instructor approval. It is the student's responsibility to process the paperwork to withdraw from the class. Failure to do so may result in student receiving a final grade of "F".

Grading:   Letter grades will be determined using a standard percentage point evaluation as outlined below.   Changes may be made at instructor's discretion and advanced notice will be given.  Total Points Possible:  TBA

At least 92%:    A
At least 82%:    B
At least 72%:    C
At least 62%:    D

Below 61%:       F 

Final grade will be determined according to the following percentage:

Discussion and Group Participations: 10%
Assignments and quizzes:  70%
Projects:  20%

Posting of Grades:  All grades will be posted online.  Students may access the course home page at any time to review your grades throughout the semester and to check on your progress.  Official grade report will be mailed out to students about two weeks after final grade is posted online during the last week of the course.
