WHAT IS HISTORY?

AMERICA BEFORE COLUMBUS

Dr. Clarence Carson and others have argued that the Native Americans were living at a neolithic level of development while the Europeans were at a more technologically advanced level which was bound to lead to conflict. What were the social, political and economic differences between the Native American and European cultures? How did they lead to conflict? In what ways were the different Native American groups similar and dissimilar to each other? Were the Native Americans the noble savage or the savage or a little of both? Who were the Native Americans? Could their way of life support the people who live on the North American Continent today?

How did the Anglos, the Spanish, etc. treat the Native Americans? Was this different than the way in which other peoples have been treated by invaders? Could the English have dealt with them in a different manner? How are native peoples throughout the world being treated today?

THE ENVIROMENT

What was the Native American attitude toward the environment? How did they change the environment? What was the land like before the arrival of the white man? What was the European attitude toward the environment? Did the attitude change?
