WHAT IS HISTORY?


    This course consists of lectures and discussions. The lectures cover specific subjects. You will need to read the textbook or other sources that give you the background or fill in the chronology. It is difficult to participate in discussion if you neglect the raeding assignments.
    Each class period, there will be opportunities to ask and answer questions and to share information. You are encouraged to participate. There will also be formal discussions and writing assignments based on assigned readings.
    Attendance is inportant. I expect you to be in class.will take advantage of the opportunity to learn. If you drop the class, you must follow the withdrawal procedures explained in the college catalogue.
    For those who wish to earn an A in the class or improve their grade, there is an optional essay assignment. This essay will range from three to five pages in length and will be typed or written in ink. You should be able to write it based on the lectures and the textbook alone, although you may use other sources. It will be graded on organization, support (political, social and economic evidence) and originality of thought.
    Your essay will involve identifying a theme or thread which runs through the period of time covered in this course, and which helps to explain the events, actions, decisions, etc. of the period. You will have to define the theme and show evidence of its effects throughout the period. This theme should be evident in the political, social and economic events of the period.
    Exams will consist of multiple choice and short answer questions. The multiple choice questions will be based on the text and the short answer questions will be based on the lectures.
    Grading will be based on a simple curve.

    I expect students to do well. If you do your reading, attend class and study, you will learn. The opportunity is yours. Take advantage of it!
