What is this course about?
This course is designed to introduce you to the second largest religion in the world; Islam. We will explore the origins of Islam, Islamic history, beliefs, practices, worldview, sacred texts, various Islamic cultures, various Islamic denominations and modern day issues within Islam.
How will it be taught?
This specific course is taught from an academic approach via the Internet, in Blackboard / WebCT. It does not assume any prior knowledge of Islam or Arabic, although having taken “Religions of the World REL 243” and or basic knowledge of the religions of the world before this course is a plus!!
We will explore Islam in sections, or “Units”, each covering different aspects of Islam. There are four units in the course. Each Unit will include sections of viewing DVDs, reading textbook chapters, viewing & listening to video clips and other multimedia, reading lecture notes with Internet links and handouts. There will also be interactive discussions and more!
What is required for the course?
Doing all assigned readings and DVD viewings, participation in the discussions, there is one quiz per unit and one essay at the end of each unit. There is also one major semester Special Project assignment which allows you many choices (research paper, presentation, interview, visit to a mosque, etc.).
