GOVERNING BOARD APPROVES SHOUAN PAN APPOINTMENT

Chancellor’s recommended candidate for MCC president begins mid-February

January 8, 2008 (Tempe, AZ) – The Maricopa Community Colleges Governing Board tonight unanimously endorsed a recommendation from Chancellor Rufus Glasper officially naming Dr. Shouan Pan President of Mesa Community College (MCC).

Pan recently attended MCC’s convocation and told faculty and staff that he would accept the position with honor and humility, if approved by the Board. “I am here because I believe in MCC. I am here because I have found a special character, an innovative spirit, and inspiring mission in MCC,” Pan told the gathering. “I’ve seen MCC’s awesome achievements, and I believe that MCC is capable of making this same level and even greater accomplishments in the future.”

Pan is scheduled to take office in mid-February, working closely in a transitional period with Acting President Bernie Ronan, who was appointed by the Chancellor in July 2007.

Chancellor Glasper named Pan his recommended candidate in mid-December 2007 following a site visit to Broward Community College’s South Campus, where Pan serves as Provost. “Dr. Pan’s commitment to and experience in higher education, his expressed desire to lead MCC, and his understanding of our world today were vital attributes in this selection,” Dr. Glasper said. The Chancellor had previously expressed that he was greatly impressed with Dr. Pan’s focus on teaching and learning and student success.

Dr. Glasper again thanked members of the search committee, the college community, citizens, and everyone who had an interest in this process for their candid and meaningful feedback during this selection. The Chancellor also extended his gratitude to Dr. Bernie Ronan for his continued service to the District.

As the new President of MCC, Dr. Shouan Pan brings 25 years of experience in community college leadership. Prior to becoming Provost at BCC’s South Campus, Dr. Pan was the Executive Dean of Instruction and Student Services at Florida Community College at Jacksonville. He held additional administrative posts at the Community College of Philadelphia, Northern Arizona University, where he was also an Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology, and at Central Arizona College. Dr. Pan was also an Assistant Professor and the Assistant Director of International Education at Hefei Polytechnic University in China. A naturalized American citizen, Dr. Pan has a history of community involvement and professional affiliations.
