Service-Learning

Welcome to The Center for Service-Learning!

Mission Statement

The mission of the Center for Service-Learning is to promote excellence in teaching and learning through active service. We collaborate with the community, encourage servant leadership, promote personal growth, and foster social responsibility.

Service-Learning Programs

Service-Learning is a teaching and learning method that connects meaningful community service with academic learning through guided reflection. Areas of focus include:

  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
  • Values Clarification
  • Career Exploration
  • Social and Personal Development
  • Civic and Community Responsiblity

Service-Learning enhances what is taught by extending students, learning beyond the classroom and providing opportunities for student to use newly acquired skills and knowledge in real life situations in their communities, locally, nationally, and globally.

The purpose of these programs is to provide students with educational opportunities in community service by placement in government agencies, educational entities, civic organizations or citizen advocacy groups. We maintain a database of over 200 agencies, which include such diverse locations as:

The Center also serves as coordinator of the campus service-learning programs by maintaining and developing partnerships between college, student, and community, and offers assistance to faculty in developing courses.

We coordinate two separate service-learning opportunities at MCC:

  • Independent Module: Offered to students since 1992, this independent academically credited class enrolls approximately 200 students per year, representing an average of 25,000 service hours to the community. Students have the option to register for these internship-type courses for 1, 2, or 3 credit hours a semester through on an open entry/open exit basis. The courses are a blend of academic study and community service, under the supervision of a faculty member. Core requirements of a stand alone service-learning class include; 50 volunteer hours per credit hour, an academic learning plan, a reflective journal, an analytical paper, and attendance at reflective sessions. Credit is given for the learning that is demonstrated through completion of the core requirements.

Current opportunities for these courses are available in 35 disciplines including; Accounting, Administration of Justice, Anthropology, Art, Biology, Business, Computer Information Systems, Communication, Counseling, Education, English, Fire Science, History, Mortuary Science, Nursing, Recreation, Physical Sciences, Political Science, Psychology, Reading, Recreation, Spanish, Sociology, Social Work, and Theater Arts.

  • In-Course Module: This model integrates a service-learning component into existing courses and may allow students to participate in community service as a way to enhance the course curriculum to deepen and bring relevance from the classroom to the larger world outside of a textbook. Requirements, similar to those of the independent modules, are adapted at the discretion of the faculty. Approximately 600 students participate in this type of service-learning option, representing an average of 18,000 hours of service.

Current in-course service-learning options include; Anthropology, Biology, Children's Literature, Communication, Computer Science, Economic, Education, English, Geography, Mathematics, Psychology, Recreation, Social Work, Sociology and Spanish.
