STEVE JACOBS: Head Track & Field Coach

STEVE JACOBS is in his 18th year as Head Track & Field Coach at Mesa Community College. Graduating from Glendale (Arizona) High School where he was a state champion pole vaulter, he was a two-time All- American in the Decathlon at the University of Arizona. He also threw the javelin and was captain and MVP of the Wildcat track team. From 1979 until 1988, he competed internationally in such events as the World University Games in Mexico City as well as three USA/USSR Decathlon meets (where he was the top American finisher in 1981) and the 1980 and 1984 Olympic trials.

He began his coaching career as an assistant at Mesa in 1982 and moved the following year to Arizona State before returning to MCC as head coach in 1988. Under his direction, the Thunderbird track & field program has consistently ranked among the top 10 in the country and recently as high as #5 in 2004. He has developed numerous All-Americans, and Mesa’s facilities are considered among the best of any community college.

RONNIE WILLIAMS: Assistant Coach, Sprints/Hurdles/Relays

RONNIE WILLIAMS is in his third year as Assistant Coach specializing in sprints, hurdles, and relays tutelage. Williams is graduated from Dorsey High School in the Los Angeles area, was two-time All-City in addition to being named team MVP. He was a member of California Community College state champions in 1993 and 1994 at Long Beach City College, and the California Community College state champion in the 400 meters in 1994. At the University of Kentucky, Williams was a five-time NCAA All-American. In 2000, he was the runner-up in the USATF Indoor Championships in the 400 meters. His personal best is 45.81 indoors, and 45.72 outdoors.

Ronnie recieved a BA from the University of Kentucky in Social Work in 1997 and came on board as a volunteer with MCC in 2005 before being hired in 2006. Williams is also a USATF Level I certified coach.

RALPH HAYNIE: Assistant Coach, Pole Vault

RALPH HAYNIE has 25 years of coaching experience at the high school, college, and club levels. Haynie is a graduate of Douglas High School (Arizona) in 1972 where he set a school record in the pole vault at 15'1". He attended Central Arizona College prior to obtaining a BA in Secondary Education from Arizona State University in 1977. While competing at ASU, Haynie set a school record in the pole vault at 17'2.5". He also placed third in the NCAA's that year as his team won the NCAA team title (1977). He holds a national junior college record at 17'.25" in the pole vault and was named to the US Team three times.

 

COLLIN POST: Assistant Coach, Throws

COLLIN POST is the current Throws Coach at MCC and a graduate of Highland High School (Arizona) in 2000. In high school competition, Post was the Great Southwest Champion in Shot Put, named to 2nd team all-state, and held the record for the top throw at 59'5.25". Post earned a BS in Biology from Boise State University in 2005 after attending Mesa Community College. He was a nine-time All-American in the shot put, discus, hammer throw, and 35lb. weight throw. He set the MCC and Region I hammer record and is a two-time NCAA regional qualifier.

Post is a member of USA-Track& Field Association, USA- Weight-Lifting, and the National Strength & Conditioning Association.

 

KEVIN HENDERSON: Volunteer Sprint Coach

KEVIN HENDERSON is in his second year as a volunteer sprint coach at MCC and a graduate of Chanel High School (Ohio) in 1983. While in high school, Henderson was a two-time state champion in the 300 meter hurdles.Henderson earned a BA in Education from Auburn University in 1989, where he volunteered as an assistant. He was the 400 meter hurdles champion in the SEC Conference in 1985 and 1989. He also won the USA Championship in the 400 meter hurdles in 1988. His personal best in the 400 meter hurdles is 48.68.

Henderson is a Level I certified coach.
