Men Off To Nationals

May 20-23 in Goodyear

Head Coach John Guerrero has had a stellar year with both the men's and women's teams in 2008. The men are off to Goodyear, AZ for the NJCAA National Championships on May 20-23.

The team comprised of Andrew Augustyniak, Jake Golembiewski, Brent Hobbs, Austin Stone, Corey Pike, Tyler Clark, Tyler Coates, Matt Genchi, and Jared Godfrey hope to bring home the title.

The Mesa men's golf team capped off a great week for the Mesa golf teams by capturing 1st place at the South Mountain CC Invitational last week at Palm Valley Golf Course in Litchfield. 

The T-birds fired back- to-back even par rounds of 288-288-576 to finish seven strokes ahead of conference leading Scottsdale CC (583). 

"Our conference tournaments come down to a putting and mental decision contest between the top teams," Coach Guerrero said reffering to how evenly matched the top four teams are in the ACCAC. 

"I think the difference for us this week is we focused and kept our emotions in check.  I was pleased with our performance,"  Guerrero said.

The men were led by steady freshman Jake Golembiewski (69-73-142) who tied for 3rd and has placed in the top ten in all ACCAC events thus far.  Fellow freshman Andrew Augustyniak and Brent Hobbs both fired (145) totals and finished tied for 7th respectively.  Sophmore Austin Stone (147) finished 11th and had the teams best 2nd round firing -3 under (69). 

Next up for the men is the Scottsdale Invitational Mar. 17-18 at Hilcrest GC in Sun City, Az.

 

Men Notch A 4th-Place Finish At PVCC

Hobbs shoots well in tough tournament

The Thunderbird men finished a disappointing 4th at the Paradise Valley Invitational played at The Golf Club at Estrella in Goodyear, AZ.  Freshman Brent Hobbs, who led the tournament after day one, finshed in a tie for 6th, firing rounds of 73-76-149 to lead the team.  Fellow freshman Jake Golembiewski finshed tied for 10th (151).  MCC shot 306 in round one and was trailing Chandler/Gilbert by eight strokes after a blistery first day of competition.  Mesa improved the 2nd day (297) but slipped back two places as the scores improved with favorable weather conditions.  South Mountain CC (594)captured the team title besting runner up Scottdale (599) by 5 strokes.  Mesa finshed at 603.

 

Thunderbird Men Finish 4th At WNMU Cactus Thaw

Augustyniak leads Mesa in meet with four NCAA schools

The MCC Men's golf team finished in 4th place at the Cactus Thaw hosted by Western New Mexico University in Silver City, NM.  The Thunderbirds were led by freshman Andrew Augustyniak (75-73-148) who placed tied for 7th in the ten-team field which had four NCAA schools competing in the event.  Sophmore Austin Stone and local freshman Brent Hobbs (Mesa High) finished in a tie for 12th at 150.  Host School Western New Mexico captured the team title.

 

 

Spring 2008 Men's Golf Season Outlook

Head Coach John Guerrero has reason to be excited about his men's golf team. More on the season about to tee off on February 6 in a scrimmage with Crand Canyon University.

The team will drive for real on February 8-10 at the Cactus Thaw on the campus of Western New Mexico University in Silver City, NM.
