Welcome to the Project

We have a new name!

The Center for Global Tolerance and Engagement has become The Engagement Project. Our new name reflects our mission of moving beyond passive tolerance to active engagement.

And we are redefining "Engagement."

At least, it seems like that. As we see it, Engagement seeks a relationship that listens, that allows the questions, perspectives and possibilities of "the other" to become part of us. Just as two partners in a marriage allow each other to help them grow into fuller persons, we believe that cultures, traditions and political movements can allow each other to help as they grow into something fuller.

We believe that tolerance is simply a first step -- a way of "putting up with" others. That leaves us with uneasy tensions, sometimes lasting over a thousand years (think Islam and the West). Engagement, we believe, is the only way out of that tension.

It is no easy task. Indeed, what we seek cannot even be named in many languages. But we need it nonetheless.

Navigating Our Site

We have developed a common website format for our department's pages, and many of our faculty are using the same format to develop their own sites as well. That should make it easier for you to find things and experience less frustration. At the same time, you may end up in one wing, and want to get back to another. Throughout the site, you can just click on the PHI-REL button on the left side to get back to square one.
