Urrea Family Endowment

The Urrea Family Endowment was established October, 2006 by Jim Zaharis and the Urrea Family. The endowment begins in honor of Beatrice (Urrea) Huber.

Family History:

Charles Urrea came to Mesa in the 1890’s. He started a freight company that supplied the Roosevelt Dam construction project and also began farming. Charles married Amelia Burrell in 1917. Amelia attended Mesa High School. They continued to farm well into the 1980's. The family was (and remains) involved in construction, business, medicine, and education.

The Urrea children all graduated from Mesa High School:

  • Beatrice (1937)
  • Celia (1937)
  • Ben (1942)
  • Oscar (1943)
  • Charles, Jr. (1946)
  • Mona (1948)
  • Norma (1950)
  • Donald (1952)

Other descendants of the Urrea family who graduated from Mesa High School are:

  • Barbara Urrea Millet (1958)
  • James K. Zaharis (1959)
  • Robyn Urrea (1966)
  • Vickie Urrea (1968)
Beatrice Urrea Huber, the oldest of the Urrea children, recently passed away (October, 2006). This family endowment is beginning in her honor.

All scholarships are financially administered by the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation , a 501 (c) 3 organization that receives and manages gifts from private donors to all the Maricopa Colleges. A volunteer board of community, business and civic leaders manages the Foundation's assets. Annual audits from the Foundation are available for review.
