The information provided here are some of the more important issues or Business Department specific.
All faculty should obtain and read the Adjunct Faculty Handbook.
  • First Week of School complete the following:
Directory Information: Update your personal contact information.
This information is used to contact you in case of an emergency and to relay information from students.

Syllabus and Schedule: Every instructor must provide students with a course syllabus that outlines conditions under which the class is to be conducted. Handout and review the syllabus in detail with students in the first class meeting. A schedule of all assignments, projects, exams and associated due dates must also be provided in the first class meeting.

Syllabus for Department: Every instructor must provide a copy of their course syllabus and schedule for the department's records. They are used as a reference when a substitute is needed and when there are student questions.

See Syllabus Requirements page for additional information.

  • Rosters: Instructors will receive the following rosters during the semester:
    • Temporary Class Rosters
    • Final Class Roster
    • 45th Day Withdrawal Roster
    • 45th Day Verification Roster
    • Final Withdrawal Roster
    • Final Grade Roster
Specific instructions will be printed on an attached sheet with each roster. Each roster is distributed for a particular reason and requires immediate attention by each instructor (as described in the attached instructions).

Instructors are responsible for turning in their required rosters to the Records and Registration Office on campus. The office coordinator cannot be responsible for turning in these rosters.

  • Instructor Lab Hours: Some CIS and BPC instructors have been assigned lab hours. These instructors must schedule and attend the required lab hour outside of the regularly scheduled class time. Lab hours may be longer and/or more frequent for short-term courses including the summer. Instructors are accountable for the lab hour, so treat this lab hour just as you would a lecture hour. If you cannot attend your lab hour as scheduled, we must retain a certified substitute.

Submit a CIS Lab Hours Form to the Office Coordinator for proper documentation.

  • Instructor Absences: Instructors are expected to be present for each class they are scheduled to teach. If you must be absent, contact the department office so that a substitute may be employed. Provide necessary information about the class activities/assignments to enable the substitute to conduct class properly. If possible, identify someone to serve as a substitute. The substitute must be certified in the discipline and must have a complete file at the Human Resources Office.

This also applies to instructors with lab hours. If you cannot attend your scheduled lab hour, a certified substitute must be retained.

Submit a Substitute Request Form to the Office Coordinator for proper documentation.

  • Dismissal of Classes: Classes and labs are to be conducted for the fully scheduled time. If a situation occurs that necessitates early dismissal of a class or lab, apologize to the students and offer to extend the next class or to meet with them individually if they desire additional assistance. Please note that dismissing classes early or completely may lead to a deduction in pay.

  • Finals Schedule: ONLY Friday night and Saturday class instructors may give their final on the last day the class meets. For ALL other class sections, finals MUST BE scheduled and given during the scheduled final's week time. The Finals Schedule is usually printed in the college's course schedule.

  • Classroom Equipment: Each classroom will be equipped with an overhead projector, screens, and white boards. If you need white board markers, ask the Office Coordinator. For special equipment such as TV, VCR, DVD, etc., make reservations a week in advance through the Office Coordinator or Media Services (480) 461-7687.

  • Handouts for Students: Instructors should order copies of handouts for students through the Copy Center instead of having students print originals in the classrooms or labs. It is less expensive for the department/college to order duplicates than to print originals. Sometimes students don't know how to print six Powerpoint slides per page, so they end up printing one per page. See the Support Services document for information on the Duplicating services.

  • Withdrawals and Reinstatements: Faculty may withdraw students who do not appear at the first class meeting by completing the official Class Schedule Change form and submitting the completed form to the Office of Records/Registration. During the Fall or Spring semester or a summer session, faculty may withdraw a student with a “W” (passing) or a “Y” (failing) either during the semester or as late as the final grade roster. Please review the refund policy published in the class schedule, and refer all students to that policy if they should inquire about a refund. Keep the yellow copy of the withdrawal (drop/add) form for your records when you drop or withdraw a student. It is also a good idea to keep a copy of each roster that you turn in.

A student may be reinstated using the drop/add form (see attached copy). Be sure to fill out the form completely, including the course number, section number and your signature.

  • Overrides: Overrides are at the discretion of each individual department and/or instructor. Please be sure that the overrides do not extend the class beyond the capacity to seat students.

  • No Food or Beverages: Food and beverages are NOT permitted in the classrooms and labs as well as in many of the other buildings.

  • Visitors in Class: College policy does not permit unregistered individuals such as, children, spouses, and friends of students, sitting in classes or entering labs due to liability issues. No animals are permitted in the classroom except certified service animals.

  • Adjunct Faculty Evaluations: The Adjunct Faculty Policy Manual states that adjunct faculty will be evaluated at least once during each of the first three semesters. At MCC we also evaluate every 3 years. Evaluations may also be conducted as part of a program review or special request by the department chair or administration. Evaluations may include:
  • EDU250 Requirement: All faculty must successfully complete EDU250, Overview of the Community Colleges, within two years of being hired.

  • Other Resources:
  • Adjunct Faculty Handbook: The information summarized on this document are some of the more important issues. All faculty should obtain and read the Adjunct Faculty Handbook. Ask the Office Coordinator for a copy.
