Rod Christian
Rod Christian teaches International Business, Small Business Management and Business Communication. He is in his eighth year in the MCC Business Dept following nine years at Rio Salado. Rod has a distinguished resume in Business and Industry including stops at Bell Laboratories, Massachusetts General Hospital, the U.S. Dept of Agriculture and the Human Services Council of Gunnison County, Colorado. Prior teaching stops include Waubonsee CC, Elgin CC, Western State College of Colorado, Bunker Hill CC, New Hampshire State, Connecticut State, and Greater Hartford CC.
A Midwest native, Rod grew up in rural Illinois. He graduated from Illinois State University with a B.S. and an MBA degree. During his early college days he was a dual major in both Business and Instrumental Music. To this day, he really enjoys playing the tuba. In fact, his first teaching job was teaching low brass to music students. Rod also has about 75 hours of additional post graduate work at Illinois State, Northern Illinois, Western State of Colorado and Utah State University.
Rod enjoys home construction and landscaping projects, has been a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, and has helped build houses in Honduras. Professional memberships include the Association for Business Communication and the National Association of Small Business International Trade Educators.
Rod is a past recipient of the National Freedoms Foundation Award for Economic Education. His college-related duties at one time or another have included: Chair of the Business Instructional Council, Chair of the District Faculty Evaluation Plan Committee, Faculty President at Rio Salado, and member of the Chancellor’s Financial Advisory Committee. Rod is currently the Program Director for Business, a member of the NCA Accreditation Committee and a member of the Business Instructional Council.
Ahwatukee residents, Rod and his wife D. J. have three daughters (Brenda, Lynette and Erin) and a grandson (Ryan). D. J. is a member of the Computer Programming faculty at Chandler-Gilbert CC. One interesting tidbit about Rod: he used to raise prize-winning purebred Poland China hogs back on the countryside of Illinois.
The most interesting place Rod has ever visited has to be the People’s Republic of China. According to Rod, China has an overload of cultural differences from the U.S. He is especially appreciative of the many opportunities available here at MCC. He has made the most of his international business background by visiting Europe, Australia and South America in addition to China.
A few years down the road, Rod hopes to be retired in a place that has changing seasons, and he hopes to keep busy composing/arranging music on his computer, flying an airplane and playing his tuba in a brass quintet.
