Sheryl Girard teaches BPC and CIS classes as an adjunct faculty member in the MCC Business
Department. Sheryl has taught for the past eight years at MCC, Rio Salado, PVCC and CGCC. During that time,
she has taught 27 different courses including Personal Computers, Using Windows, Computer Usage and Applications,
Database Management, Operating Systems, Netware and Local Area Networks. She has even taught a
Virtual Reality class.
Ms Girard earned her Bachelors in Management and Masters in Organizational Management from UofA and the
University of Phoenix. Now in her 14th year at Salt River Project, Sheryl’s earlier careers included positions as
varied as A&W Car Hop, Librarian, Phlebotomist, Switchboard Operator, Dunkin Donuts Finisher, Waitress,
Lifeguard and Certified Aquatics Instructor. In addition to her Community College certification, she holds a
Secondary Teaching Certificate (with ESL endorsement) and a State of Arizona Vocational Teaching Certificate.
Sheryl’s professional organizations include Toastmasters International, the Association for Information and
Image Management, and the Association for Information Management Professionals. For the latter, she served as
Phoenix chapter president for the past two years and is a long-time board member.
Community service is a huge part of Sheryl’s life. She is a 5-time nominee for the prestigious Karl F. Abel
Volunteer Recognition Award from SRP and won the award outright in 2001 for her work at the Phoenix Zoo.
She has accumulated over 1400 volunteer hours at the Zoo. She enjoys special events like ZooFari, Boo at the
Zoo and ZooLights. In addition, Sheryl and Shiloh, her therapy-trained Golden Retriever, regularly volunteer
with Gabriel’s Angels to visit abused children in group homes and other facilities.
In her spare time, Sheryl enjoys working on her genealogy to find out more about her ancestors, and she loves
to be around water, especially to Scuba dive. Interestingly, she is a Certified Scuba Diver and member of the
Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). She also likes to sing and play the guitar, has taken
cake decorating classes, and continues to take occasional classes at Rio, MCC and elsewhere.
Although Sheryl was a member of the very first graduating class of the new Mesa High School, she was
born into a Navy family and, as a youngster, lived in numerous places including California, Bermuda and
Hawaii. Sheryl has two adult children: Crystal teaches 2nd grade in Phoenix and recently finished her Masters
in Professional Counseling; and Thomas works for America West/US Airways and is pursuing a career as a
US Marshall while attending classes here at MCC.
Understandably, Sheryl loves to travel. She has visited Germany and Disneyland Paris, Venice, Rome and the
Vatican. She considers Bermuda the most interesting place she has lived. Someday she hopes to retire from
SRP and become a full-time teacher. Sheryl and Shiloh make their home in Tempe.
