Derek Rushing
Professor Derek Rushing has taught computer classes in the MCC Business Dept for nine years. A California native, Derek grew up in the Silicon Valley during the apex of many historical developments and says, “That experience changed my life forever.” He has worked in one capacity or another since he was 10 years old. Some of his early technological experiences came from the Hewlett Packard and Raychem companies in the Bay area. Over time, Derek has been a Process Engineer, Software Test Engineer, Project Manager, Project Executive, Program Director, Software Consultant, Design Consultant, Venture Capitalist and a Project Consultant. He received his B.S. in Industrial Technology from San Jose State and his M.A. in Educational Leadership from NAU.
At MCC, Derek has designed technical degree programs and certificates and taught hundreds of working professionals various Computer Information Systems subjects including Web Programming, Systems Design, Project Management, XML, Infrastructure Design, Enterprise Data Strategies, Disaster Recovery, Computer Security, Performance Analysis, E-Commerce and Internet/Intranet Technologies. He has served as the MCC rep to the District Instructional Council for the CIS program and as the Campus Computer Information Systems rep to the State of AZ Computer Information Systems Articulation Task Force. Derek is a member of several local and international organizations and has served or is presently serving in both member and board-level roles.
Derek has an extensive background in both the private and public sectors. He has managed personnel and projects worth millions of dollars in software and equipment, and he has designed software used by thousands. His resume includes stops at Amdahl/Fujitsu, American Express, Boeing, Allied Signal, Charles Schwab, Avnet, TRW, the University of Southern California, Stanford University, the AZ Dept of Transportation, the City of Los Angeles, Wells Fargo Bank, AZ Dept of Revenue, Isuzu America, Pima County Recorder, and Bank of America.
As Chief Technology Officer for CarTown Corporation, Derek was responsible for defining the national computer technology strategy and tactical implementation plan for this association of high-line wholesale car dealers. As Chief Information Officer for the AZ Dept of Transportation, he supervised Systems Development, Telecom & Networking, Servers, R&D and Planning and was involved in many high profile projects. He also served for 8 years in Mesa’s Information Services Division where he was involved in many projects including defining the initial Internet Infrastructure for the city and serving as Principal Consultant to the Internet Team.
In his spare time, Derek consults on various programs, projects and development initiatives for both the public and private sector. He produces music and can be found performing solo piano and serving as Music Director at several valley venues. Derek and his wife, Vanessa, make their home in Gilbert.
