The Aborigines believe in totems. A Totem is a relationship between a person or a group of persons and, for example, a natural object or species, as part of nature (Berndt 57). It views nature and life, it views the universe and man. It determines the Aborigines' social groups and links them to their past, the Dreamtime.
Totems are very complex and there are several different kinds. There is
an individual totemism, sex totemism, moeity (a moiety is a larger social
division) totemism, section and subsection totemism, clam totemism, local
totemism, and multiple totemism. Basically a totem connects a person or
a group of people to a spirit being. This spirit being is sometimes intimately
connected to a dreaming site or track. Each totem brings different responsibilities,
rites, and ceremonies.
