This is a look at how the Lacandon Maya farm. This is a study of how millions of people could live within a tropical rainforest and not impact that forest environment in a harmful way. Today, modern farming has stripped countries such as Panama of critical soil nutrients leaving the land nearly useless. In the Peten region of Guatamala, the Maya population reached several million people. Projections today indicate only about 10,000 to 20,000 people could use this region. The secret for the Maya was their balance of cropping multiple crops in the same way that the Lacandon do today.
