Caves that were painted in detail seemed to serve a purpose--such like those of initiation rites, or hunting rituals. The caves were painted with legends and served as a reference for the younger generations.

The cave Grotte Cosquer, dated at 27,000 years ago, is an underwater cave in France. This site has beautifully decorated walls. The earliest art in this cave are tracings of hands. A later phase of art includes a wide variety of animals that are now extinct. (link to Grotte Cosquer - CaveArt folder)

The site of Lascaux, also in France, contains 600 paintings, 1,500 engravings, and a great number of artifacts including tools, bones, needles, ornaments, rope, and many of other relics. The study of these works show that these drawings were made by experienced artisans. This cave became a canvas about 17,000 years ago.
