Lewis Binford used his Nunamiut research to make an important distinction between different forms of hunter-gatherer lifeway. This distinction is important in prehistory, too, for there was a fundamental difference between hunting and gathering in warmer climates where resources were available for most, if not all, the year, and colder, even extreme arctic, environments, where there were many months where game was scarce, even inaccessible. It was in these environments that efficient storage of large quantities of game meat (and sometimes plant foods) was of vital importance.
