The emergence of early Homo appears to be primarily in east Africa. Evidence of a transitional forms similar to Homo habilis have been found in south Africa and the later Homo erectus is found in south Africa. The spread of Homo erectus out of Africa probably tood place at or following 1.0 million years ago. The sites of Koobi Fora and Olduvai Gorge are significant in terms of the story of early Homo. Several sites in China and Java also play an important role after the spread of Homo erectus.
