Upcoming Geography Field Trips

Saturday, October 8: 8-11 am- South Mountain Park

Join us on a 3 mile hike as we explore the physical characteristics of South Mountain Park, including rocks types, precipitation runoff patterns, plant and animal life. Urban sprawl will also be observed and discussed. Trip Leader: Steve Bass

Various days in late October and early November- Salt River Channel and Rio Salado

Join us as we explore flood control along the Salt River channel in Phoenix and Tempe. Contact trip leaders for specific dates and times.

Saturday, November 5: 7:00 am - 7:00 pm: Verde Canyon Railroad

The Verde Canyon is often called “Arizona's other Grand Canyon”. Enjoy spectacular canyon scenery on a train trip that offers fall foliage and hundreds of migratory birds, such as the majestic bald eagle. Trip Leader: Karen Blevins

Saturday, November 5: Gila River Huhugam Heritage Center

Join us as we visit the ethnobotanical garden at this innovative and unique Center, opened recently by the Gila River Indian Community. Topics discussed will include human-land interactions, vegetation, erosion, and the mountain ranges near the Center. $5 admission.

Saturday-Sunday, November 12-13: Grand Canyon

If you are physically fit, join us on a very challenging 12.5 mile hike to Plateau Point in the Grand Canyon. This hike descends approximately 3200 feet into the Canyon, providing a breathtaking view of the Colorado River.

Saturday, December 3: 8:00 am- 1:00 pm: Camelback Mountain

Join us for a challenging hike up Camelback Mountain, with stops to discuss precipitation runoff, rock structure, weathering & erosion, and vegetation. This trip promises a solid workout with great views of the city and of Phoenix's infamous “brown cloud”.
