ASB223 Buried Cities and Lost Tribes: Introduction to Mesoamerican Archaeology (3 credits)

This class focuses on the major New World civilizations including the Olmec, Maya, Teotihaucano, Zapotec, and Aztec of Mesoamerica.

The particular achievements of each culture with respect to art and architecture are studied, as well as differences in political structures and strategies, such as rulership and warfare.

The processes guiding the transformation of New World peoples from nomadic food collectors to sedentary villagers to sophisticated urbanites are reviewed.

An optional weekend field trip to Teotihuacan and the Templo Mayor is organized..

SPA225 Beginning SpanishConversation I (3 credits)

The course focuses on practical communication in Spanish with emphasis on listening and speaking skills. It is targeted for those who have already acquired basic vocabulary and structures in Spanish (from first year college Spanish courses or some beginning Spanish conversation courses, or a background in speaking the language at home). This course is excellent for teachers working on a bilingual or ESL endorsement. The beautiful and historic Spanish colonial environment of Guanajuato is the perfect place to go out into the community to practice and apply the language and new vocabulary you are learning. Three-day weekends also allow for lots of hands-on language practice.

SPA201 Intermediate Spanish I (4 credits)

Coversational Spanish. Basic sentence structure, pronunciation, and vocabulary necessary to develop speaking ability in Spanish. Designed for students seeking speaking and listening abilitites with little emphasis on grammar.

SPA 241-242 Spanish and Spanish American Film I, II

Course Description : Analysis of Spanish and Spanish-American film as art form and as social commentary. Includes documentary, biography, and films based on wroks of literature. All films, course work, class participation, and oral and written reports conducted in Spanish. This is a Humanities & Fine Arts/Global awareness course.

Course Description : Survey of the political, economic, and social forces which have shaped the development of Mexico from pre-Columbian times to the present.

SOC 140 Racial and Ethnic Minorities (3 credits)

Course Description :
Contemporary racial and ethnic intergroup relations, emphasizing cultural origins, developments, and problems of the various minority groups in the United States.

An advantage of Guanajuato as a site for this course is that the role of Latin Americans in U.S. society can be better understood.
