I was at a conference recently and met a two-year college English teacher from another state. When she heard that I was from Mesa Community College, her face broke into a smile and she exclaimed, "I went to MCC!" She went on to say that from her very first college course to the completion of her Ph.D., her single best experience in higher education was at MCC. In fact, it was her experience here, with one faculty member in particular, that put her on the path to become an English professor.
This wasn't the first time I've heard such sentiments. I often meet people around town, even across the nation, who have gone to MCC and remember it fondly. They appreciated the small class size, the professional faculty and staff, and especially the feeling that they mattered as people. They often comment on the sharp contrast they felt later at a large university where it wasn't uncommon to sit in introductory classes with 400 other students and never actually meet their teacher. It was MCC they remembered as their oasis.
The English department at MCC is proud of its reputation and works hard to maintain it.
