English Programs :

The Department has never tried to concentrate on any one area of literature or on a single critical orientation. Rather, we have worked to gather a lively diversity of professors with strengths in every facet of literary endeavor.

MCC’s English Department offers comprehensive programs in the following areas:

  • Composition:
The Composition Program helps students learn to write effectively in academic, professional, civic and personal contexts.  In addition to the required first-year composition courses (ENG 101 and ENG 102), MCC offers courses in developmental writing, technical writing, academic writing, and personal exploratory writing.

  • Creative Writing:
Creative Writing courses are offered with both the ENG and CRW prefixes.  We offer introductory courses along with more specialized workshops in poetry, fiction, and screenwriting.

  • English as a Second Language:
MCC’s ESL program offers four levels of courses in English grammar, listening and speaking, and writing with oral practice. After taking the language placement test (CELSA), students are advised about appropriate classes and program options.

  • Humanities:
In MCC’s Humanities courses, students explore humanity’s artistic and intellectual achievements within their historical, aesthetic, and philosophical contexts.

  • Journalism:
Journalism students choose from a variety of courses related to news writing, feature writing, and public relations, and many work on the staff of the Mesa Legend, MCC’s award-winning newspaper.
  • Narrative Studies:
Students learn to examine narrative texts in literature, film, and other media within their cultural contexts.

  • Women's Studies:
Women's Studies, an intensive interdisciplinary liberal arts program, provides students with the tools and opportunities to discuss and critique the historical and contemporary theories and practices of feminism(s). Students take a variety of courses focusing on women's experiences and perspectives, exploring topics such as history, culture, class, race, ethnicity, sexuality, and gender in order to help bring about equality, understanding, and peace.
