MCCCD-ASU Alliance
The Alliance was formed to promote positive and seamless experiences for Maricopa Community County College District students who transfer to Arizona State University. Partnership strategies have been designed to significantly increase the number of students who complete a community college degree, transfer to and persist at the university, and graduate with a bachelor’s degree.
Benefits to students include:
• Priority or guaranteed admission to ASU degree programs when a prescribed course sequence, called a Maricopa ASU Pathways Program (MAPP), is followed.
• Tuition incentives such as a cap on tuition increases during enrollment at ASU.
• Specific scholarships available for meritorious MCCCD students who complete the appropriate transfer degree.
• Dedicated advisement by ASU Transfer Advisors who hold office hours at the Maricopa Community Colleges.
For more information, visit http://www.asu.edu/transfer.
NOTE: In the past the education sub-group of the Alliance has been referred to as the Teacher Education Alliance (TEALL).
NAU 2+2 Programs
Although Northern Arizona University’s main campus is located in Flagstaff, through NAU’s extended campuses several teacher certification bachelor’s degrees can be completed right here in the Valley of the Sun! These programs are dubbed “2+2” because NAU offers only the junior and senior level courses here, so students need to complete their freshman and sophomore years at the community college first.
• NAU @ Mesa Community College = Elementary Education, ESL emphasis [spring start]
• NAU @ Chandler-Gilbert Community College = Elementary Education, various academic emphasis options [fall start]
• NAU @ Scottsdale Community College = Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education emphasis [fall start]
• NAU @ Central Arizona College (Apache Junction) = Elementary and Special Education dual certification [semester start varies]

MCC-Grand Canyon University Partnership *** COMING SOON ***
During 2009 planning has been underway for Grand Canyon University to begin offering a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at the MCC Southern and Dobson campus. Course delivery would include a mix of in-person and internet-based courses.
Students would be encouraged to take up to 84 credits at any of the Maricopa Colleges and earn a minimum of 36 credits through GCU. This allows students to take a greater number of community college courses that can count toward their bachelor’s degree.
Plans are to offer participants of this special MCC-GCU Elementary Education cohort a reduced GCU tuition rate. Transfer credits from the Maricopa Colleges ideally include completion of the Associate in Arts in Elementary Education (AAEE) degree plus courses toward a 24-credit content area emphasis in math, science or English. Additional transfer requirements apply.
*** Note: the partnership is in the final stages of formation.***

Bringing Home the Global Diaspora through Art with Irish Artist Julie Moorhouse
In Ireland, Julie Moorhouse uses her art to express the phenomenon of displacement of people that affects populations worldwide. Ms. Moorhouse visited Mesa Community College during November, 2005. Julie demonstrated her project strategy in which she invites immigrants to be the subjects of her art. She showed us how our future teachers can work with children to forge personal links that foster understanding and build a culture of peace. Her work in Ireland and in Arizona gives us a powerful vision for teaching children of all ages respect for human dignity.
