Mesa Community College’s Teaching and Learning Communities Education Program is designed to enhance and facilitate students’ initial experiences in the college culture. This program offers support for diverse students by including:
- A four-semester block plan for elementary and secondary education majors
- Interdisciplinary connections through linked coursework and faculty collaboration
- Program advisement and mentorship
- Service learning and collaboration with local schools
Our TLC Program models an approach to teaching and learning which is responsive to the needs of our various student populations and encourages excellence in education through higher level thinking skills, such as problem solving and critical thinking.
In moving through four semesters together as a cohort, TLC students are recognized as strong contributors to a dynamic, social learning process. A safe yet challenging learning environment is created in which students feel accepted, valued and represented. Instructional strategies build upon students’ prior knowledge. The natural connections that surface from linked classes enable students to deepen their understanding of course content.
Program participants are strengthened by alliances formed during undergraduate shared experiences. The program’s focus on experiential and integrative learning empowers participants with a strong foundation in professional knowledge that leads to increased competence as they enter their profession.
