Credit by Exam

People Talking

Students may apply for Credit by Examination in certain courses by obtaining the appropriate form in the Admissions Office, paying the required fee, and completing the examination. Students who wish to take a credit by exam must be currently enrolled at Mesa Community College when the test is administered.

Credit by exam is a way of getting credit for knowledge of another language. As an example, native speakers, returned missionaries, or students who have lived and/or studied abroad may be excellent candidates for credit by exam.

Only grades of A, B, C, D, or P earned as a result of this examination will be recorded on your transcript. A notation of "credit by examination", the grade earned and number of credits will appear on transcript. Fees are not refundable after the examination has been administered, regardless of results.

You may test out of a maximum of 4 semesters. A lower level course may be tested while enrolled in a higher level course, as long as it is done prior to completion of the higher level course. Our department recommends completion of all credit by exams at least two weeks before campus finals begin.

CBE Restrictions

You may not use the Credit by Exam for the following:

  • To challenge a course a second time;
  • To challenge a course while currently enrolled in the course;
  • To establish credit in a previously completed course; and
  • To establish credit for a lower level course in which credit has already been received.
