Biology Concepts is one of the most popular courses used to satisfy natural science requirements while learning about the living world. BIO 100 is intended for non-biology majors. It satisfies the general studies requirement for lab science (SQ at ASU) and is easily transferred. It is NOT the recommended prerequisite for BIO 201, 205 or 241. It satisfies the very general competencies adopted by the Maricopa County Community College District, but read on for the philosophy underlying our implementation of this course.
To find out when BIO 100 is offered, see the Online Schedule of classes. You can even register online or by phone at 480.461.7700 or 1.888.622.9834.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The first objective of BIO 100 is for you to gain an understanding of a series of basic biological concepts unified by the theme genetic change in living organisms. An equally important second objective is for you to gain an understanding of how scientists reached conclusions concerning these concepts or, in other words, how science is done. Besides satisfying natural science requirements, we hope that you will gain a better understanding of the world around you and contemplate your place in this natural world.
LABORATORY OBJECTIVES
The first objective of the Investigating Biology Laboratory is to introduce most of the concepts to be covered in a hands-on setting. Hence, you will hear about most of the topics that we will cover first in laboratory followed by further discussion in lecture. The second objective of the Investigating Biology Laboratory is to develop your understanding of science as a process. To accomplish this goal, you will be actively involved in scientific investigations related to the concepts covered in this course, and you will be tested on your understanding of the scientific process.
A sample syllabus for BIO100 is available on Brad Kincaid’s BIO100 website at www.mc.maricopa.edu/~kincaid/bio100 See the Information page there for specific information about course policies.
