PREHEALTH PROGRAM

MCC offers the following courses as prerequisites for programs in chiropractic medicine, dental hygiene, direct care practice, exercise physiology/science, mortuary science, nursing (practical and RN), pharmacy, physical therapy, physical therapy assistant, surgical technology, surgical technology first assistant, radiography, and ultrasonography. For descriptions and prerequisites, click on the course name below.

  • BIO 160 Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology
  • BIO 201 Human Anatomy and Physiology I 
  • BIO 202 Human Anatomy and Physiology II  
  • BIO 205 Microbiology 

These courses are not required for students in pre-medical or pre-dental programs. Pre-medical and pre-dental students should contact their transfer institution for information and advisement for those programs.

BIO 160 Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology

There is no prerequisite for this course.  BIO 160 is not a prerequisite for BIO 201.

Study of structure and dynamics of the human body. For students who desire a one semester course in  anatomy and physiology.

BIO 160 fulfills the requirement for an SG (science general) elective course at ASU. BIO 160 fulfills the requirement for a course in human biology for social work majors.

BIO 160 is a required prerequisite for programs in Direct Care Practice,  Dental Hygiene (at Gateway, Phoenix and Rio Salado Colleges), Mortuary Science, Nuclear Medicine Technology, Physical Therapy Assistant, Radiography, Respiratory Care, Surgical Technology, and Ultrasound Technology. BIO 201 Human Anatomy & Physiology I

PREREQUISITE:  Bio 181 or Bio 156, or equivalent, or permission of instructor.

Study of structure and function of the human body. Topics include cells, tissues, integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems.

BIO 201 fulfills the requirement for an SG (science general) elective course at ASU.

BIO 201 is a required prerequisite for programs in Nursing (practical and RN), Chiropractic medicine, Dental Hygiene (NAU & Pima C.C.), Exercise Physiology/Science, Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, Physician Assistant, Radiology (Pima C.C.), and Surgical Technology First Assistant. Students applying for the Physical Therapy Assistant program at Gateway C.C. may take either BIO 201 or BIO 160. Please contact your transfer institution for advisement information.

BIO 202 Human Anatomy & Physiology II

PREREQUISITE: Bio 201 or equivalent with a C grade or better or permission of instructor.

Study of structure and function of the human body. Topics include endocrine, circulatory, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive systems and fluid and electrolyte balance.

BIO 202 fulfills the requirement for an SG (science general) elective course at ASU.

BIO 202 is a required prerequisite for programs in Nursing (practical and RN), Chiropractic medicine, Dental Hygiene (NAU & Pima C.C.), Exercise Physiology/Science, Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, Physician Assistant, Radiology (Pima C.C.), and Surgical Technology First Assistant. BIO 205 Microbiology

PREREQUISITE: Bio 181 or Bio 156, or equivalent, or permission of instructor.

Study of microorganisms and their relationship to health, ecology, and related fields.

Topics include the differences between viruses, bacteria, and  parasites; characteristics that affect pathogenicity;  immunology; methods to culture and identify microbes;  and antiseptic techniques.

Bio 205 fulfills the requirement for an SG (science general) elective course at ASU.

Bio 205 may not be used for microbiology majors credit at ASU unless a diagnostic test is passed. Bio 220 is the preferred course for microbiology and biology majors at some institutions. Please contact your transfer institution for current advisement information.

Bio 205 is a required prerequisite for programs in Nursing (practical and registered), Dental Hygiene (NAU and Pima C.C.), Chiropractic medicine, Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, and Physician Assistant majors at most schools. Bio 205 is recommended for Nutrition, Optometry, and Exercise Physiology/Exercise science majors at many institutions. Please contact your transfer institution for current advisement information.
