MUSIC THEORY PLACEMENT EXAM
The items covered in this exam represent all of the topics you need to know to enter MTC 105 (Music Theory I). After taking the exam, print out the results page and have it ready to show to your music advisor.
If your score is 80% or above, you are definitely ready to proceed to MTC 105. If your score is 70%-8O%, you are in a borderline group and need to decide with your advisor which course would be best for you: either Introduction to Music Theory (MTC 101) or Music Theory I (MTC 105). A score below 70% indicates you need to enroll in the Intro. class: (MTC 101).
We know that any exam open to the public will be available to those who may wish to "cheat" or have an undue advantage. Don't let any outside pressures tempt you to falsely represent your knowledge in this area. During the first few weeks of Music Theory I, you will need to demonstrate a thorough command of this information.

TO TAKE THE MUSIC THEORY PLACEMENT EXAM, follow these steps:
(You may want to print this guide before beginning the process)
1. Go to http://webct.mc.maricopa.edu
2. Click “Log in to myWebCT”
3. Choose one of the following Username and Password combinations. Type them in the appropriate spaces, then click “Log in”.
MCC Username: g_music1 Password: g_music1
MCC Username: g_music2 Password: g_music2
MCC Username: g_music3 Password: g_music3
4. Click on link to “Music Theory Placement Test”.
5. Read the posted information, then click the link to “Music Theory Placement Exam” when you are ready to begin.
6. Click on link to “Music Theory Placement Exam”.
7. Read all of the instructions on how to take complete the exam (called “quiz” here). When you are ready to begin click “Begin Quiz”.
IMPORTANT: If you are running a pop-up blocker, you must disable it before clicking “Begin Quiz”. Or, hold down the CONTROL key while clicking the link to disable it momentarily.
8. Answer each question as it is presented, then SAVE YOUR ANSWER before going to the next question. You will know you have finished when a check mark is indicated for each of the 30 questions on the right half of the screen.
NOTE: When you first open the exam, all 30 questions should be represented on the right side of the screen with a small yellow circle. If any of these questions have a checkmark by them instead, do not continue the quiz. Instead, log out and log back in with a different username and password from the list about.
TO VIEW AND PRINT YOUR RESULTS:
1. When you have answered and saved all 30 questions, click “Finish”.
2. When asked “Submit Quiz for grading?” Click “OK”.
3. Click “View Results”.
4. PRINT THE PAGE. This page will tell your music advisor how many questions you answered correctly and what your percentage grade was.

If you are having difficulty with WebCt or any other technical aspects of this exam, you may contact the MCC Help Desk at phone 480-461-7217. The help desk is open from 7 A.M. to 8 P.M. Monday through Thursday, from 7 A.M. to 6 P.M. on Friday, and from noon to 5 P.M. on Saturday. It is closed on Sunday. Personnel can answer questions about PC or Macintosh computers.
