Swords and Plowshares

Swords and Plowshares is a new series dedicated to the consideration of the deeper issues that make for war and peace. In Spring '06 we sponsored "The Rabbi, the Imam and the Christian," and in the future we are planning a forum on "Bible, Qur'an and Peace: Are We Ignoring a Divine Demand?"

For Fall 2006, we are presenting a seemingly radical idea: "Can a Jew Let Go of Israel?" Led by Tom Shoemaker, we will wrestle with the question from the inside-out, from within Judaism, rather than from without. Is it possible that the most Jewish response to the problem of the Middle East is to renounce the State of Israel as a Jewish ideal? What would be the ramifications?
