Philosophy asks and attempts to answer significant questions about the human condition. Philosophy, from the Greek "love of wisdom, " is the study of the most general and abstract features of the world and categories with which we think: mind, matter, reason, proof, truth, and so on. Philosophy asks what reality is, what exists, who we are (metaphysics), what we can know (epistemology), and how we should live (ethics). Other disciplines include logic, aesthetics, philosophy of religion, philosophy of language, and philosophy of science.
Philosophy helps us to think for ourselves, to justify our positions, to think critically, to solve problems, to make good arguments, and to have an open mind. Since the study of philosophy teaches us to question assumptions, it provides a basis for all other academic study.
Philosophy is an excellent foundation for law school, business school, or graduate school because philosophy majors tend to score in the highest percentiles on entrance exams. A philosophy major is also helpful for careers in journalism, publishing, and government, academic appointments in universities, colleges, and high schools, ethics consulting in hospitals and businesses, and careers in government that relate to ethical and political issues and the development of public policy.
Some famous philosophy majors include comedians Jay Leno, Steve Martin, and Dennis Miller, former President Bill Clinton, author Elie Wiesel, journalists Stone Phillips and Juan Williams as well as the CEO's of Time-Warner and Hewlett-Packard.

Our Site
We have developed a common website format for our department's pages, and many of our faculty
are using the same format to develop their own sites as well. That should make it easier for you
to find things and experience less frustration. At the same time, you may end up in one wing, and
want to get back to another. Throughout the site, you can just click on the PHI-REL button on the left
side to get back to square one.
