Coaching Certification
The State of Arizona required valid certification in First Aid & CPR, 250 hours of verified coaching experience in the sport to be coached and 15-16 semester hours in coursework from an accredited institution.
Mesa Community College provides all the approved curriculum for the Athletic Coaching Certificate required by the State of Arizona.
This certificate is applicable to either individual or team sports.
This certificate is valid for 6 years and is renewable. This certificate entitles the holder to perform coaching duties in interscholastic and extracurricular athletic activities. Certificate is provided by the Arizona Board of Education.
Requirements for Athletic Coaching Certification
- Valid certification in First Aid/CPR or completion of HES 154 - First Aid/CPR and successfully passing the national organization's certifying exam for First Aid/CPR.
- Completion of 16 semester house of courses in the following areas:
- EXS 281 - Methods of Coaching [3]
- BIO 160 - Introduction to Human Anatomy & Physiology [4]
- PSY 215 - Introcution to Sports Psychology [3]
- PSY 248 - Psychology of Adolescent Development [3]
- HES 271 - Prevention & Treatment of Athletic Injuries [3]
- 250 hours of verified coaching experience in the sport to be coached. Coaching experience may include expereince as a head coach or assistant coach in a school program or in an organized athletic league. (verification of experience on offical letterhead from the employer required)
OR - register for EXS 198AC - Projects in Community Service [3]
OR - register for REC 282AC - Volunteerism for Recreation: A service learning expereince [3]
Both classes provide opportunities to network and get initial coaching hours and experience required for certification.
- Possesion of a valid Class I or Class 2 Fingerprint Clearance Card issued by Arizona DPS.
