Geology is one of several
disciplines in the Physical
Science department here at
Mesa Community
College, the largest of the Maricopa
Community Colleges. Geology
is offered at the Southern &
Dobson campus and at the Red Mountain campus. |

 |
|
Every semester, we serve
roughly 600 students, the
vast majority being non-science majors
who enroll to satisfy their science lecture-lab requirement,
as life-long learners, etc. |
|
 |
|
We offer a range of different
introductory-level
courses (100- and 200-level), and
four separate lecture-lab combinations (101-103, 102-104,
105, and 110-111). Our labs reflect our philosophy that
instruction should be interactive, dynamic, and fun. None of these classes
have prerequisites. |
|
 |
|
Our convenient schedule of
day and night classes is important
for our many students who also work full-time during
the semester. We generally offer over
20 sections of GLG 101 (lecture) and 25 sections
of GLG 103 (lab). In 2007, MCC Geology courses
will also be offered online for the first time. |
|
 |
|
Several field-based courses
complement our program, and include field
trips to the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Carlsbad Caverns,
etc. Class sizes are generally
small (<24 students), except for a few of the larger
lectures (<48). |
|
 |
|
Our Geology
Club is an active
student organization that supports outreach activities
and conducts field trips. Our Geology Outreach program
continues to be at the forefront of MCC's efforts to
expand science awareness to K-6 students. |
|
 |
|
We currently have four
full-time and roughly a dozen part-time faculty members.
Our instructors are enthusiastic and employ a range of
classroom methods and technologies to deliver top-notch
instruction. We love to teach! |
