Preventing Hate Crimes

The first step in dealing with hate crimes is focusing on prevention. We need to stop hate crimes from happening in our society and around the world.

Over the years there have been several different prevention acts put forth and passed through Congress. There are also many non-profit organizations, which have been dedicated to fighting intolerance and which are trying to "stamp out hate". In my opinion, the best way to deal with prevention is to educate people. It is necessary to educate them through newspapers, television, radio, etc. that these crimes are not acceptable and there are severe punishments when these crimes are committed. Commit a crime and you will be punished. Also, in a lot of ways it has to do with the way that parents bring up their children, although this is not always the case. Parents that raise their children to like everyone regardless of skin color, gender, and sexual orientation are more likely to growi up and not commit hate crimes.

Sadly, we are never going to eliminate hate crimes altogether; it is impossible to influence certain people. So the only way of dealing with hate crimes is to prevent them from ever happening. To improve hate crime prevention, effective data collection procedures must be implemented, so that patterns can be determined and anticipated.
