
The father is a very big part of a new baby coming into the world. The times have changed and getting involved is a very important step in becoming a good parent. Now days instead of having the fathers wait around in the waiting rooms smoking cigars they are getting in on the actual birthing process.
Emotions
Emotions are running high during a pregnancy both for mother-to-be and the father-to-be. Fathers-to-be might experience several different emotions. In the book What To Expect When You're Expecting, it suggested that the father could be feeling left out. While the mother does get a lot of the attention due to the medical processes, the father should be encouraged to express his feelings on becoming a father. as well

One concern that some fathers have is dealing with the fact that adding another member to the family might also affect the financial status of the family. Most new fathers are worried about how are they going to take care of the new family financially, and if they will be able to manage the new expenses. Don't let this interrupt your time of enjoying becoming a father. Most couples who have to budget for a new member do make it through the rough times. The best advice is to relax, get organized, and prepare a new family budget.
Becoming involved
Now more than in the past fathers are encouraged to get involved with becoming a "team" with their partner, or as stated in What To Expect When You're Expecting - become a "partner-in-reproduction." (pg, 412) The father can do several things which foster his involvement and help the mother.
The father can attend important appointments such as going to see sonograms and hearing the first heartbeat. The book also suggests that the father could change some of his routines to help with her necessary changes, such as eating healthy, exercising, and quieting any unhealthy habits. Also getting involved with the shopping for a new baby can be a fun way to get prepared.

New fathers have a lot of resources out there on what to expect when having a baby. Talk to family and friends who have been through this before to get learn from their personal experiences. Talk to your family doctor if you are unsure about any health questions, and look to publications and articles to give you advice or ideas.
