DEATH OF AN INFANT

The death of an infant child is very tragic in every aspect.

Because infants have barely begun to live their lives, to see that life taken away is extremely hard. This is true not only for parents, but for all the loved ones who the child was taken from. Profound feelings accompany the death of an infant child.

Interestingly enough, infant death today is perhaps made more tragic by the fact that compared to historical times fewer children die young. In earlier times, because of disease and natural hardships, many parents lost one or maybe more of their offspring. In modern times, the death of a child seems so far removed and impossible that it's occurrence is easy to deny. Sadly though, parents face this devastating phenomenon far too often in our society.

When a child dies, family members have their entire life abruptly altered in the blink of an eye.

Many things take the lives of our nation's children - accidents, illnesses and violence.

One noted cause of infant death is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Though its cause is not fully explained by medical science, SIDS accounts for 7,000 tragedies every year.

One source of comfort for many bereaved parents is Compassionate Friends.
