Things Daycare Instructors Need to Know

According to Jean Piaget infants and toddlers are in the sensorimotor stage.

This means that they are learning to coordinate sensations with physical movements. There are six substages:

  • Simple Reflexes
  • First Habits and Primary Circular Reactions
  • Secondary Circular Reactions
  • Coordination of Secondary Circular Reactions
  • Tertairy Circular Reactions, Novelty, and Curiosity
  • Internalization of Schemes

Also, infants and toddlers are developing a sense of object permanence. This means that they realize that an object continues to exist even if it is not seen, felt, or heard.

It is important for providers to be aware of these concepts so they can provide appropriate learning activities.
