Sense of Self

A sense of self is something we all come to find. Interestingly, the sense of self first starts to develop during the second year of life .

A sense of self can be defined as one's representation of themselves as well as the content of one's self-conceptions.

How can we tell if an infant has developed their sense of self? Psychologists have conducted studies by placing infants in front of mirrors with rouge dots painted on their noses and recorded how many times they tried to touch their nose. Some argue that the infant's sense of self does not start to develop until the age of about two, others disagree. They argue that ones's sense of self begins to develop as early as birth to two months of age. From there, the "self" continues to develop into other stages of a developing sense of self.
