Understanding Infant Development
Brain Development, Cognition, Sensation and Perception

"Making the decision to have a child is momentous -- it is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body."
- Elizabeth Stone

The birth of a newborn is a wonderful event. The first two years of life mark the second stage of human development referred to as infancy. The rate of physical development at this time is extensive. By understanding development in infancy, parents and caregivers can help an infant get the best possible start in life. Certainly, caring for the physical well being of an infant is critical. Ensuring the health of one's infant is a primary concern for parents. This includes, among others, meeting the infant's nutritional, hygiene, medical, and immunizations needs. There are other areas of development that are important as well. These include understanding brain and sensory development as well as infant states and temperament.

"In the baby lies the future of the world. The mother must hold him close so he will know the world is his. The father must take him to the highest hill so he can see what his world is like."
