Economics Course Descriptions


ECN100 - Economics in American Society: (3 credits 3 periods)
Selected principles of macroeconomic and microeconomic analysis. Recommended as a social science elective and for some paraprofessional programs. Not for business transfer students; credit will not be granted if Economics 111 or 112 has been completed.

ECN111 - Macroeconomic Principles: (3 credits 3 periods)
A descriptive analysis of the structure and funtioning of the American economy. Emphasis on basic economic institutions and factors that determine national income, unemployment, inflation, and monetary and fiscal policies.
Prerequisites: NONE

ECN112 - Microeconomic Principles: (3 credits 3 periods)
Microeconomics analysis including the theory of consumer choice, price determination, resource allocation and income distribution. Includes non-competitive market structures such as monopoly and oligopoly; and the effects of government regulation. Selected issues examined.
Prerequisites: NONE

ECN160 - Economic History of the United States: (3 credits 3 periods)
The evolution of the American economy in the context of the developement of the North Atlantic Economic Community. The development of the major economic institutions of the United States; significant historical events such as the great depression; major trends in economic thought as related to economic developments. Emphasis on production technology in agriculture and industry, the labor force, market structure, the monetary system and the economic role of government. Recommmended for students who intend to enroll in ECN111 or ECN112.

ECN165 - The Border Economy
Introduction to the regional economic issues that exist on both sides of the United States-Mexico border. Condsieration given to the historical and geographical forces that have impacted border economic development. Current issues examined, such as immigration, NAFTA, and the growth of maquiladoras.
Prerequisites: None.

ECN170 - Political Economy
The relationship between politics and economics in the United States, with emphasis on current issues and government responses. Consideration of problems raised by alternative political economic systems.
Prerequisites: None.

ECN204 - Contemporary Macroeconomic Issues
Macroeconomic principles applied to current problems of economic policy, e.g., inflation, unemployment , gross domestic product (GDP), forecasting, ramifications for the international system.
Prerequisites: ECN111

ECN212 - The World Economy
An analysis of the economic interdependence among nations, with emphasis on international trade and finance. Consideration given to the role and function of the multinational enterprise.
Prerequisites: ECN112 or permission of instructor.

ECN230 - Urban Economics
Analysis of the structure and growth of the urban economy, with some focus on the intrametropolitan organization and change. Consideration of the provision of public services within the Phoenix metropolitan area.
Prerequisites: ECN112 or permission of the instructor.

ECN250 - World Economic Systems
A descriptive analysis of capitalist, socialist and mixed economies. Some consideration also given to the problems of less developed economies.
Prerequisites: None

ECN263 - The Economics of Natural Resources, Population and the Environment:
Applies economic analysis to both the causes and possible remedies of the problems of environmental deterioration and natural resource depletion. Includes discussion of the economic problems of urban communities and the relationship between population and economic growth and the depletion of natural resources and environmental pollution.
Prerequisites: ECN100 or ECN111 or ECN112

ECN280 - Health Care Economics
Microeconomic analysis of the production and distribution of health care. Consideration given to the problems of gevernment regulation.
Prerequisites: ECN100 or ECN111 or ECN112
