Marine Biology

Welcome to Marine Biology at Mesa Community College!

This is a four hour credit Marine Biology course designed for the non-major. There are no prerequisites. It is a laboratory science and satisfies the SG (General Science) requirement at ASU. Although it is not a major's course, some Biology majors may find it useful as an overview if they have an interest in this field. Topics include: History of Marine Biology, Sea Floor Geology and Ecology of ocean ecosystems such as the coral reef, estuary and kelp beds.

Careers in Marine Biology are also explored. Laboratory consists of study of both living and preserved material. We also make use of our department salt water aquarium. The Internet is used to keep up to date on current ocean problems and investigations. Videos are also used to "bring the ocean into the classroom". In lieu of a final examination, students are asked to write a paper on an ecological problem of the ocean. We then discuss ways to help solve the ecological problems encountered. Join us in exploring this fascinating and fragile world beneath the sea!
