No. Distance learning classes cost the same as traditional classroom classes. However, some DL classes -- as with some traditional classes -- might have an additional lab or supplies fee.

To see the course schedules, go here and click the links under "Internet Classes."

http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/services/schedules/

To find out more about a particular course you'll need to contact the instructor who teaches it. In addition, some instructors have course preview pages accessible via their homepage. To find an instructor's e-mail address and/or homepage, go here: http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/other/directories/

Go here to access the MCC academic department pages: http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/dept/

Some instructors might have you attend a required orientation in person at the beginning of the semester. In addition, many Distance Learning classes require students to take their exams on campus or in some other proctored environment. Some classes also have live "chat" sessions where students are required to be on-line during a particular day and time. Overall, however, most Distance Learning classes never meet in person. To find out details regarding a class you are interested in or are already registered for, contact the instructor.

No. In fact most distance learning classes are not. Although distance learning provides a level of flexibility for students, most instructors require that students adhere to a set schedule for turning in work and taking exams.

You can find your instructor's name in a number of places: the on-line schedule, the paper schedule, and the "MyClasses" area of the MyMCC portal . You should e-mail your instructor as soon as possible after registering. You can find your instructor's e-mail address via the faculty directory at: http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/other/directories/

Distance Learning classes fill fast--the earlier you register, the better your odds of getting in a desired course. If you find that the course is full you can contact the instructor to ask for an overload. Due to the substantial time demands placed on instructors who teach on-line, most instructors are reluctant to grant overloads. Drop/Adds are particularly frequent during the week prior to the start of classes and during the first week of classes. The DL office recommends that students check availability every day during these two weeks--there is a good chance that a course that is closed one day will have an opening later.

To view the on-line schedule, go here: http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/services/schedules/

The methods used to evaluate students and procedures for turning in work vary by instructor. Students need to contact the instructor for all details regarding Distance Learning classes.

Be sure to follow the directions for new Distance Learning Students. If you still can't find your class, wait until the start date of your course. Some instructors do not activate the class website until the official start date. If you can't find your course after that date, be sure to contact your instructor.

You will need to contact the instructor to find out if he or she requires particular computer skills and software requirements. If you possess the skills and equipment outlined in the distance learning orientation, you should have no problem navigating any distance learning course.

It is highly recommended that you possess the skills and equipment outlined in the distance learning orientation.

If you do not have reliable access to a computer you should not enroll in a Distance Learning course. The MCC library has numerous computers available to all MCC students, including those enrolled in Distance Learning classes, but if you rely on these computers you will need to be on campus on a regular basis.

The library computers are open to all MCC students, including those enrolled in Distance Learning classes. In order to use the Multi-Use lab, you need to be enrolled in a course that required you to pay a special lab fee.

Go here and follow the instructions to set up an MCC e-mail account. https://www.mc.maricopa.edu/apps/mymcc/CreateAccount.jsp

You can access your MCC e-mail via the Internet by going to this URL: http://mail.mc.maricopa.edu:8080/

  1. First contact your instructor by email, by phone, and by a phone message left with the department secretary.
  2. Contact the department chairperson if the instructor cannot be reached by these methods.
  3. If that does not result in a response, you should contact the Associate Dean assigned to the department. Call 461-7145 or 461-7315 to find out which dean you need to talk to.
  4. All contact information is available online and at (480) 461-7000.

The MCC Online Office can also intervene on your behalf.

For all technical problems, contact the Technology Support Services by telephone at 480-461-7217 or by email.

Go to the e-mail section of the Technology Support Services website for instructions on how to configure an e-mail editor to send and receive MCC e-mail. http://wiki.mc.maricopa.edu/tsswiki/index.php/Portal:Email

Yes. Go to the MyMCC Portal, click on MyTools, and then click on the e-mail forwarding tool link. Some instructors might require you to send e-mails using the MCC account. The forwarding tool will not allow you to avoid that requirement.

The MyMCC Portal is web-based interface that allows registered students to access class schedules, web-based class tools, and provides web-based access to MCC e-mail. The MyMCC account tools include the ability to change or reset an MCC password, forward MCC e-mail to another e-mail account, and put e-mail on vacation. It also provides a link to the scholarships database, delivers "alerts" and messages from instructors, allows students to apply for Veteran's benefits, and, where applicable, provides links to WebCT, Midas, Collabra, and Webboard. Students MUST have an MCC email account to use the Portal.

It sometimes takes a couple hours for the portal area to synch with student registration information. During the beginning of the semester this delay is sometimes magnified. Keep trying to access the portal. If you are not able to access it within 48 hours, an error has probably occurred and you'll need to contact the Technology Support Services to fix it. Go here to contact the Technology Support Services: http://wiki.mc.maricopa.edu/tsswiki/

Some users of America Online dial-in service have reported problems using the MyMCC portal, MCC e-mail and/or WebCT. If you are an America Online user try the following:

  1. Log in to AOL as you normally would.
  2. Open an active chat room session, if you wish, to help keep your session from timing out from inactivity.
  3. Minimize your AOL browser and open up another browser, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox.
  4. Conduct all of your MCC web activities using that other browser -- DO NOT use the built-in AOL browser

For all technical problems, contact the Technology Support Services by telephone at 480-461-7217 or by email.

WebCT is a course management system that some instructors use to deliver their on-line materials. Besides providing access to on-line content, WebCT can also be used to deliver on-line exams and quizzes, provide individual students with access to their grades, and serve as an on-line discussion board. If your instructor is using WebCT it will appear when you access your course via the MyMCC portal. For more info on how to use WebCT, see the distance learning tutorial pages.

Be sure to deactivate any "pop-up" blockers or anti- "spyware" software. In addition, make sure you are using a browser that is compatible with WebCT. To tune up your browser, go here.

MCC's current version of WebCT has been known to have problems with the Netscape browser (4.7 and earlier), particularly during on-line exams. It is therefore recommended that you only use Internet Explorer if your course is delivered via WebCT. If you are an AOL user, also follow the FAQ instructions under: I am an AOL user and am having problems.
