Getting Started With Your Distance Learning Class -- Details

Once you've enrolled in your class, follow these steps to get started.

  1. Complete the tutorial.

If you haven't already done so, have a look at the distance learning tutorial and the orientation. (You don't need to do them again for each class, but they may provide useful reminders.)

  2. Set up an MCC e-mail account

Once you are registered, set up a MyMCC e-mail account. Many distance learning instructors will require you to use your MCC e-mail account for all course communications. In addition, the userid and password you set up for the e-mail account also let you use the MyMCC portal.

The MyMCC portal is an "in-house" interface that allows authorized users* access to class schedules, a web-based email system, and many web-based tools - including WebCT, Webboard, and Midas.

    * An authorized user is a faculty member, staff member, or student who has signed up for an MCC email account — you MUST have an MCC email account to use the Portal.

Set up an MCC e-mail account by visiting https://www.mc.maricopa.edu/apps/mymcc/CreateAccount.jsp

Math and open-entry distance learning courses have specific instructions. After you set up your MCC account, do the following:

    Otherwise, go to step 2.

  3. E-Mail your instructor

Solid communication between student and instructor is essential to a successful distance learning experience. You should e-mail your instructor as soon as possible after registering for the course.

    • You can find your instructor's e-mail address on the MCC faculty/staff directory page: http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/other/directories/
    • There, you will find an alphabetical listing of all MCC faculty that includes their e-mail addresses, and if applicable, a faculty homepage.
    • If you do not know your instructor's name, try looking for it in the MyMCC Portal under the "MyClasses" tab.
    • If you cannot find your instructor's e-mail address, you must contact the relevant department AS SOON AS POSSIBLE for information on how to e-mail your instructor.
    • Click here to log on to your MCC e-mail: http://mail.mc.maricopa.edu:8080/

  4. Locate your course

In some cases you will have access to your distance learning course shortly after registering. In addition, some faculty have websites set up for current and prospective students.

    • To locate your course, log on to the MyMCC portal and click on the MyClasses tab. If you see a "WebCT" link near the top of the page on the right hand side, click on it. In all likelihood that is an access point to your online class and contains information on what you should do next.

    • If you don't see a WebCT link in the portal, go to the Faculty and Staff Directory, look up your instructor and see if he or she has a homepage listed. If so, click on the homepage link. In all likelihood, your instructor has a link on his or her homepage that will take you to the internet course.

    • If you still can't find your class, wait until the start date of your course. Some instructors do not activate the class website until the official start date. If you can't find your course after that date, be sure to contact your instructor.

    • Do not delay in communicating with your instructor.

  5. Complete the distance learning checksheet

Print out the student checklist and use it to navigate your distance learning course

    • After you have found your distance learning course, print out a copy of the student checklist. It is available in 3 formats: Microsoft Word (doc), Portable Document Format (pdf), and Rich Text Format (rtf)

      DOC -- PDF -- RTF

    • Use the checklist to help acquaint yourself with the information you will need to successfully complete the distance learning course. You should know all the information contained in the checklist within three days after the course starts. See the checklist for more details.
    • Unless you register late, you should know your instructor's e-mail address and the location of your course no later than Monday of the first week of classes. If you have not heard back from your instructor and/or do not know how to access your course by the first week of class, see Getting Help for instructions on what to do next.
    • Be sure to check your MCC e-mail account regularly. Most instructors will send course information to that address.
