MCC Minigrants:
The International Education Office funds $10,000 in mini-grants for activities that enhance and increase the international understanding of our college community.
GOAL:
To foster global understanding by providing support services and programming that enhance the international efforts of MCC.
ACTIVITIES:
Curriculum
Internationalizing the curriculum is one of the key components in providing students with a broader appreciation for and understanding of the global community. To be eligible for a mini-grant, the proposed curriculum project must provide evidence that student learning will be enhanced and sustained beyond the initial grant. The proposal will be evaluated on the following criteria:
- The project meets the college initiatives to internationalize the curriculum.
- The project enhances student learning.
- The project will have sustainable outcomes.
Education Abroad
Education Abroad is a memorable and life-changing international experience for most students. The purpose of mini-grants in this area is: 1) to provide a faculty member with the opportunity to travel abroad to explore new programming possibilities. 2) To provide a faculty member with the opportunity to travel abroad to substantially improve an existing exchange. 3) To provide a structural component for a new or substantially changed Education Abroad program--such as a second faculty member joining an exchange to "learn the ropes." The evaluation criteria will be based on:
- The proposed project is for Education Abroad
- The project enhances Education Abroad efforts at MCC
- The project improves (is essential to) the international experience that students will receive
International Conferences
The Office of International Education provides an opportunity to faculty to submit a grant proposal to attend a field related conference abroad. The purposes of this mini-grant are to provide a faculty member: 1) with an opportunity for professional growth; 2) the possibilities of developing linkage with other international institutions; and 3) an opportunity to bring back the global perspectives to his/her class. To be eligible for a mini-grant, the proposed project must provide evidence that the faculty‘s knowledge will be substantially enhanced, the college will benefit, and student learning will be enhanced and sustained as the result of this travel. The committee will evaluate the proposals based on:
- The attendance at in international conference or the presentation is beneficial to the college.
- The project enhances the subject matter efforts at MCC.
- The project improves (is essential to) the international experience that students will receive.
GRANT REQUIREMENTS:
Faculty interested in a mini-grant must submit a formal proposal. Funds are available on a competitive basis through a grant proposal process and are not designed to sustain projects and programs in the medium or long run. Proposals will be reviewed and selected by committee.
Deadlines and Submission Instructions
- Fall deadline: Third Friday in October by 5:00 pm
- Spring deadline: Third Friday in March by 5:00 pm
All proposals should be submitted to the International Education Office, Building 41. All proposed activities much be concluded and receipts submitted by September 1st.
Funded Areas
The areas that will be considered for funding are curriculum, Education Abroad, and international conferences. Average awards are from $1000 to $3000, not to exceed $5000.
MINIMUM PROPOSAL COMPONENTS:
- Project rationale & justification.
- Project description: The Intended goals, time line, and how the project will be executed.
- Project participants: include brief background information on the project coordinator(s)/participant(s).
- Project impact: Benefits to students, college & community. Challenges and target audience.
- Letter of support from department chair.
- Official letter of invitation from the host institution, organization if appropriate.
- Budget:
- Personnel: Time and corresponding dollar amount for each person involved with the project.
- Description and cost of any materials, equipment, and supplies required for the duration of the project.
- Travel: The budget section must reflect both travel cost for each person for each trip (e.g., airfare) as well as per diem, per person and a detailed daily itinerary. The rationale/justification for all travel must be clearly described in the text of the proposal. Please see the application form.
ACTIVITES NOT SUPPORTED BY INTERNATIONAL GRANTS:
- Capital equipment purchases (other than visual media, books, and maps in support of international projects).
- Activities that are considered to be the routine responsibilities of the college. (personnel, general supplies, etc.)
- Student support for travel, conferences, and materials.
- Refreshments for class activities.
