Doing Library Research

A good research paper should include information from a variety of sources:

  • Books
  • Encyclopedias and other reference works
  • Magazines and journals
  • Newspapers
  • The Internet
  • While the Internet may provide useful information, it may not be your best source.


    Print Resources
    MCC Library Catalog
    Use for books and audiovisual materials at all the libraries in the community college system. Titles at other campuses may be requested if “available.” Utilize the “Basic” function for a keyword search. To find a specific title, author or subject, utilize the “Browse” function. Enter the word or words that best describe your topic.

    Search by:
         General keyword  =Indians of North America
         Subject keyword  =Native Americans and health
         Title keyword      =Warrior woman

    Reference & Circulating Books
    Materials about the subject Indians of North America are assigned call numbers E76 through E99. To find dictionaries, directories, almanacs, encyclopedias, statistics and other related books, browse the shelves in the Reference Collection in the above call number range. Use the same call number range to locate circulating materials that can be checked out. Below is a sampling of titles at our 2 libraries.

    Southwest Reading Room
    A special collection of Southwestern materials located in the Reading Room on the third floor of the library. This collection includes history, natural history, geography, ethnic studies, and arts and humanities of the Southwest Region.

    Periodicals
    In our periodical reading room on the first floor, there is a collection of journals, magazines and newspapers to which MCC subscribes. Notable titles on Native Americans include: Journal of American Indian Education, American Indian Art Magazine, Kiva, Native Peoples and the Navajo Times.

    Print Indexes
    The Art Index, Humanities Index, and Social Science Indexes are located on the index tables on the second floor.

    This database indexes 1,000 magazines and journals, providing full text for more than 500 titles.

    Academic Search Premier
    This database includes nearly 4,000 scholarly publications full text, including full text for more than 3,100 peer-reviewed journals.

    MasterFILE Premier
    This database indexes 3,100 magazines and journals providing full text for more than 1,800 titles.



    National News
    Online access to several national newspapers including the New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post.

    Ethnic NewsWatch
    Full text collection of about 200 newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press providing a perspective on the history, culture and news of diverse peoples. Searchable in both English and Spanish with both languages represented in the full text entries.

    Accessing Library Resources
    From Home

    If you have a computer with Internet access, you can make use of the library’s databases from the convenience of your own home. Simply set your Internet browser to the library’s main web page (shown below) and follow the links.
    Follow these steps:

    1. Go to http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/library/

    2. To search for magazines or journals, click on “electronic resources.” At the top of the index page, click the link “Off-Campus Access.”

    3. Log on with your MCC e-mail user name and password.

    4. Make a selection of one of the databases listed.
    Native American Culture resources are in the “General” section.

    All of the databases listed may be accessed from your home or school computer.
