Doing Library Research

A good research paper should include information from a variety of sources:

  • Books
  • Encyclopedias and other reference works
  • Magazines and journals
  • Newspapers
  • The Internet
  • While the Internet may provide useful information, it may not be your best source.

    MCC Libraries have many electronic resources, including online reference works, electronic books, periodical indexes and magazine and journal articles. For resources specific to research in psychology, the following electronic resources are suggested:

    Through Ebrary and NetLibrary you can search and view the full-text digital version of over 1,700 books in MCCC’s eBook collection. To access ebook titles, click on “electronic resources” from the library homepage.

    Use this general interest database to search through over 7 million articles from magazines and scholarly journals. For best results, use the Subject search option.

    PsycInfo
    PsycINFO is an abstract (not full-text) database of psychological literature from the 1800s to the present. An essential tool for researchers, PsycINFO combines a wealth of content with precise indexing so you can get just what you need easily.

    Psychology & Behavioral Sciences
    Covers topics such as emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry and psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational and experimental methods. Nearly every full text title included in this database is indexed in PsycINFO.


    WilsonSelect Plus
    Full text articles in science, humanities, education and business. Coverage from 1994 to present.

    Medline
    Indexes and abstracts more than 3,500 journals in the medical fields, including clinical and experimental medicine, dentistry, health services administration, nursing, nutrition, pathology and psychiatry. Coverage from 1965 to present.

    Accessing Library Resources
    From Home
    If you have a computer with Internet access, you can make use of the library's databases from the convenience of your own home. Simply set your Internet browser to the library's main web page (shown below) and follow the links.

    Follow these steps:
    1. Go to http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/library/.

    2. To search for magazines or journals, click on
    "Electronic Resources." At the top of the Electronic Resources page, click the "Off-Campus Access" link.

    3. Make a selection of one of the databases listed.

    4. Log on with your MCC e-mail user name and password.

    Psychology resources are in the “General” and “Health/Psychology” sections

    All of the databases listed may be accessed from your home or school computer.
